The BA program in Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies is designed to provide students with a flexible, broad-based education in theatre. Students in this program have the option to pursue a particular specialization within the study of theatre, such as stage management, design, directing or dramaturgy, or can couple their study of theatre with a non-theatrical discipline such as business, social justice, psychology or art. The course of study for a student enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies Program can be customized to the student’s particular interests and career goals. Beginning in Fall 2023, annual tuition for this program will be $20,000.
The Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies Program is housed in the Interdisciplinary Conservatory of the Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA). Our faculty is comprised of full-time professors as well as many active theatre professionals who lend their unique talents and expertise to our Conservatories. At CCPA, our students learn from and work alongside the very best, and a low student/faculty ratio results in a focused study that is tailored to each student's needs.
Unlike many Theatre Studies programs, CCPA’s Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies Program is administered and fueled by the faculty, staff and intensive teaching style of our Theatre Conservatory training. The productions in which students in the Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies Program take part are staffed, designed and directed by individuals with extensive experience as working professionals in the industry.
This degree is rooted in tenets of stagecraft and training worthy of the professional performer, and the study that a student undertakes in any of the disciplines that branch from this strong performance core - be it in business, writing, dramaturgy or other concentrations - will easily fold into either the professional, not-for-profit or commercial worlds.
Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies students are eligible to audition for CCPA productions alongside our Acting, Music Theater and Music Theater: Dance majors as well as have the opportunity to work with directors, designers and technicians behind the scenes. In addition to our production schedule of approximately 14 productions per academic year, there are opportunities for participation in student-generated productions as well.
Located in the heart of Chicago’s Loop, CCPA is just steps from Grant Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Tony award-winning theatres such as the Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Lookingglass Theatre and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre.
