About this event

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Finale
A new pastiche opera collaboratively created by Junior-Senior Opera & CCPA student composers

Two performances:
Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Operas tend to have stereotypically contrived, romantic plots, with everyone either dying before the final curtain or ending up with a happy ending which they may or may not have earned. What would happen if the characters in an opera went on emotional journeys that modern young people can actually identify with? The students of Junior-Senior Opera, in collaboration with director Claire DiVizio, music director Jonathan Gmeinder, and CCPA student composers, are excited to tell an entirely new story. Using familiar music from opera and musical theatre as well as new compositions, eight young people explore what their lives might look like if they refused to conform to the expectations set by society, friends and family, and plot devices. Whether or not they end up "happy" by the final scene depends entirely on whether they've reached an arrival point in their journey of self-actualization. And if they haven't? Well, life goes on after the opera is over.
