Starting in Summer 2019, Roosevelt will offer an urban, job embedded, post-baccalaureate teacher preparation program designed specifically for paraprofessionals, teaching assistants, full-time subs, and other individuals who are employed in Dolton School District 149 and who are committed to teaching in grades 1 through 6 in the district. This innovative, two-year program features an affordable tuition rate of $500 per credit hour that will not increase over the two-year period of study. To meet the needs of working adults, core courses in the program will be delivered face-to-face in the summer semester and online in the fall and spring semesters.
The new program, called Roosevelt JET Prep, will be offered in collaboration with Dolton School District 149 Roosevelt and District 149 faculty will serve as mentors and instructors in the program, and field and clinical placements will take place in District 149 schools . Individuals who are not current employees of School District 149, but who demonstrate a commitment to working in the district, are eligible to enroll in the program. In addition, paraprofessionals and teaching assistants working in other nearby school districts are welcome to apply for admission and enroll.
ROOSEVELT JET PREP PROVIDES OPTIONS FOR ENHANCED TEACHING AND LEARNING
Roosevelt JET Prep’s unique design enables students to earn highly needed endorsements in bilingual and ESL education and special education (LBS 1)by the end of the program. Students can select which endorsement to earn, or can choose to add on an endorsement after the completion of the teacher licensure program. An MA degree in Elementary Education can be earned by the end of the program, or during the first year of full-time teaching after completion.
Roosevelt’s individualized coaching framework provides each student with a faculty mentor who guides students through increasingly complex field experiences leading to student teaching. Students enter the fifteen-week student teaching experience with a firm grasp of the instructional skills and practices needed for licensure, degree completion and career success with diverse student populations.
