This unique and exciting program will help you, as an au pair working in the United States, to gain the most from your American experience. The program can also satisfy the U.S. Department of State au pair educational requirement. It is very affordable and may be customized to fit your needs. Most au pairs can earn all the educational hours they need by completing two of our 3-day weekend courses, plus pre-assignments and follow-up work.

Through a fun and interesting combination of classroom discussions, fieldtrips, community engagement, and other activities, you will learn important skills for dealing with the cultural and personal challenges that international visitors in the U.S. often face. These courses will assist you in interacting directly with Americans through a number of valuable learning opportunities designed to help you enjoy and make the most of your time abroad.

You will also learn a great deal about the Chicago area and gain important background knowledge to help you better understand and appreciate the American way of life. Topics include:

Course descriptions

Course A - American Dreams: You and Your Community

You will identify personal learning goals for your international experience and complete related projects and activities. You will also interact directly in American life by participating in community-based learning experiences in Chicago and within the communities where you live. In addition, you will learn strategies for resolving conflicts you may encounter while living abroad. This will help you better understand culture shock and how it can affect you both in the U.S. and when returning home. Finally, you will learn about and experience the rich cultural diversity inherent in U.S. communities, with a specific focus on Chicago.

Course B - American Dreams: USA and Chicago in a Nutshell

In addition to gaining a greater understanding of the United States and the Chicago area, you will also have the opportunity to share your home country's culture with other students and compare it to key aspects of American life. You will gain in-depth knowledge of U.S. customs, rituals, celebrations, and important holidays while also learning about exciting events in U.S. history, many of which took place in Chicago. Through various fieldtrips and activities, you will be able to explore many of the important historical sites that you’ve learned about in class.
