On April 27th, Justin Shea, Visiting faculty of Finance, Finance Department Chair Rifat Gorenoer, and leaders in the Chicagoland open source R Statistical Programing community held the first general R Data Science conference in Chicago at Roosevelt University! Speakers discussed various applications of R language, including R for general Data Science, Finance, and even high performance computing applications with R and C++. Open to the general public, about 150 people attended, including students and faculty of Roosevelt.

Over 35 speakers, representing Fermilab, Uptake, Allstate, Capital one, Nuveen Investments, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Chicago, Roosevelt University, the Field Museum, and more gave presentations. We are delighted to report that 30% of our speakers were women, which is relatively unheard of in STEM fields. We are happy to be moving the field toward gender equality, as is in line with our values and commitment to Social Justice.

It was a well-sponsored and well-organized conference, with much hospitality and full engagements by attendees.  We are grateful to Microsoft, Capital One, Braintree, R Studio, and Roosevelt University’s Walter E. Heller College of Business for their generous sponsorship and for making it a very successful conference!
