The Writing Center for Composition Students

Peer tutoring is an effective technique for helping composition students become more proficient in college-level writing.  While the center welcomes writing from any subject, tutors are specifically trained to help tutees with developing strong thesis statements, topic sentences, documentation and citation, organization, support, and clarity, all important characteristics of a good essay.  Tutors can also show students how to use their writers’ guide to find their own solutions to problems they may have in the future.  Despite what some may think, the Writing Center is not an editing service.  Tutors actually help students develop and revise their assignments, but the main goal is to help students become independent writers.

First-year composition students are strongly urged to visit the writing center.  Tutoring benefits both students who are struggling with their writing and those who are just looking to improve themselves.  The skills learned in composition courses are carried through one’s entire college career and the Writing Center is there to help students leave prepared.

Students can have sessions on a walk-in basis or set up an appointment, and professors can also schedule group work sessions for their entire class.  Online tutoring is available for students at Schaumburg or with busy schedules.  All students can benefit from occasional tutoring, but some students may need on-going attention to their writing.  Those students can set up a weekly standing appointment.

The Writing Center for Composition Instructors

Although the Writing Center is a resource primarily for students, there are a number of services open to instructors.  The Writing Center hosts various workshops and roundtables for faculty on writing issues and the teaching of writing.  The center’s director is also willing to work with faculty to develop more specified workshops for a particular class.  As a composition instructor, consider taking advantage of the following services:

Introductions: Someone from the Writing Center would be happy to come to your class and talk with your students about our services.  This encourages students to come to the Writing Center who may not have thought of it on their own. It also sends the message that you, the instructor, think tutoring is worthwhile.

Group Work: The Writing Center can send a group of tutors to your classroom to facilitate group work.

Feedback on Assignments: Faculty find that having a conversation with a tutor about a writing assignment provides a useful student perspective.  Tutors can shed light on how students might interpret an assignment or what language might be confusing.

Workshops: The Writing Center gives class workshops on documentation, thesis development, organizational strategies, and common grammar errors. We also would be happy to work with you to develop a workshop geared to your class.

Writing Community: The Writing Center is a space on campus devoted entirely to writing. A space where writing happens and conversations about writing and the craft of writing are what we do. Stop in and chat.
