This course extends the skills developed in ENG 101 by teaching students how to gather and evaluate sources, and how to incorporate the ideas, theories, and findings of other thinkers into their own academic explorations of a topic. Most students in this course have had ENG 101 as a prerequisite. Some have completed 100 and 101. In a few exceptional cases, students have been exempted from both 100 and 101 based on their RUA scores. No student is exempt from ENG 102. Texts The program director orders a standard composition handbook for use in all composition courses except ENG 100. Each instructor orders his or her choice of assigned reading for the course. Many find it useful to organize the course around a theme which allows individual students to develop their own research interests while maintaining a coherent context for peer feedback. Essays Students perform a variety of writing exercises and short essays leading to the production of two research papers, at least one of which should be an argumentative essay. The revisions of these two research essays should equal 20 standard pages (5000 words). Students are required to demonstrate competence using one of the standard academic citation forms. Final Exam There is no final exam on the content of ENG 102
