In this course, students are introduced to the strategies and techniques of expository, analytical, and persuasive writing employed in effective academic communication. Essay assignments will require students to reflect on and respond to ideas that they encounter in course readings. The course highlights principles of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revision, and peer review. All ENG 101 students qualify for the course by demonstrating a solid level of basic skill in English in the RUA or by having successfully completed ENG 100. Texts The program director orders a standard composition handbook for use in all composition courses except ENG 100. Each instructor orders an additional collection of readings of his or her own choice. The readings in 101 should come from a variety of disciplines and discourses, and should reflect the sustained complexity necessary for analytical interrogation. Essays Students perform a variety of writing exercises, including some kind of writing every week, and a minimum of five graded essays produced through the multi-drafting process. Over the course of the semester, the revisions of these five essays should amount to a minimum of 25 pages (6250 words). Final Exam ENG 101 includes a final exam requiring students to write in response to a reading. The readings assigned for these exams are chosen by instructor autonomously; similarly, instructors grade exams independently.
