Competencies and Practices of Training & Development Professionals
Training and Development
If you are very new to the field, you might wonder what training and human resource development professionals do on a regular basis. Here are some typical
practices:
Identify and assess employee development needs within an organization.
Provide effective solutions that meet an organization's short- and long-term objectives.
Design and conduct orientation programs and arrange on-the-job learning opportunities for employees.
Help employees maintain and improve their professional and technical skills and prepare for positions requiring greater skills.
Help management improve interpersonal and leadership skills in order to more effectively lead their organizations into the next millennium.
Design and manage individualized/group learning and career development plans to strengthen employees' existing skills and develop new skills that will help the organization succeed in the marketplace.
Create programs to develop executive potential.
Confer with all levels of management and act as a learning consultant to the organization.

Another way to gain expertise is to become active in our student alumni associate, the Training and Development Network. At regular meetings, current
students and alumni can network, share expertise, and gain new perspectives from distinguished guest speakers. Contact Tara Hawkins for more information.
