Job Shadowing: Teacher Tip Sheet
         

What is Job Shadowing? A one-time, half-day career awareness activity in which a student spends time one-on-one with an employee observing daily activities and asking questions about the job and workplace.

Goal: To provide students with an opportunity to experience a real work environment in their field of interest.

Preparation

Develop Preparation, Day of, and Follow-up programs for students

  • Develop complementary activities for students based on desired results.

  • Create guides for both students and employer

Contact Employer

Anticipate Employer Questions

  • What exact responsibilities are being asked of the company?

  • What will this program cost the host in wages, training time, and materials?

  • Will my staff have to do a lot of paperwork?

  • Will the host get adequate program support once students are coming to my workplace?

  • What kind of students will be recruited?

  • Will I be able to choose which students are placed at my work site?

  • Who is responsible for addressing disciplinary problems?

  • Why should I participate

Follow-up

Decide most appropriate follow-up activities for students to do.
