Education Courses

For those who want to become teachers: Dozens of one-week, intensive summer courses in Education give you the opportunity to start to your teaching degree or certificate. Some of these include Teaching for Equity and Social Justice, Foundations of Middle School, Adolescent Development, and Literature for Children and Adolescents. Longer session classes are also available, such as Exceptional Children & Youth, Technology in the Classroom, Human Development, and many more.

For those who are already teachers: If you have the summer off from teaching, become a student instead at Roosevelt University. Expand and update your knowledge by taking a class in the subjects you teach, or branch out to learn other subjects. Plus, you can add to your teaching certificate with courses from Roosevelt's College of Education:

  • Middle School Endorsement—two one-week intensive courses, offered Downtown and in Schaumburg
  • ESL Approval—begin the six-course sequence with two intensive courses offered in Schaumburg
  • Special Education Approval—a three-course sequence, offered Downtown and in Schaumburg

Online classes are highly interactive, taught to groups of students during the regular semester term, and blend scheduled assignments, discussions, and interactions with the flexibility of doing class work at convenient times within the class schedule.

Summer Biotech Institute
(Presented in collaboration with Xomix, Inc., and State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity)

Academic Program: This will introduce high school juniors and seniors to current concepts and basic techniques in modern biotechnology. Emphasis will be on DNA, proteins, genetic engineering and preparation of reagents. Students will learn how to isolate and analyze nucleic acids and proteins. Students will also be introduced to the scientific literature and writing of science reports. There will be special presentations on employment and educational opportunities in biotechnology.

At the end of the program students should be familiar with the following:

  • Structure and function of cells and cellular components
  • Isolation and purification of DNA
  • Analysis of proteins
  • Transformation of bacterial cells
  • Polymerase chain reaction and design of PCR primers
  • Use of the Internet to access biological information
  • Laboratory safety
  • Record keeping

Internship Program: Students completing the Academic Program will have the opportunity to participate in a one or two week internship experience in an academic, commercial or clinical research setting.

Take college courses while you're still enrolled in high school. Use part of your summer vacation to earn undergraduate credit through Roosevelt University's Early Start Program. English Language Program

As a non-native speaker of English, you can prepare for study at the graduate or undergraduate level through English as a Second Language classes. Classes provide you with practice in both social and academic situations. You can take these classes if you have been admitted to the University for degree work; if you are a non-degree seeking student, you can apply for English-Only Studies. All students must have the equivalent of a high school diploma.

Hands Together, Heart to Art

The Auditoriuhttp://auditoriumtheatre.org/wb/media/camp/0001.jpgm Theatre of Roosevelt University is proud to present the fourth year of our one-of-a-kind summer camp program, Hands Together, Heart to Art. This program is designed for children 7-14 years old who have experienced the death of one or both parents. Employing several different areas of the performing arts, the program encourages communication, fosters emotional growth, and provides the consolation of friendship and compassion.

From July 7-18 and July 28 – August 8, 2008 the Auditorium Theatre will partner with prestigious Chicago companies The Joffrey Ballet and Child’s Play Touring Theatre, Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, and licensed counselors to produce Hands Together, Heart to Art. This unique camp experience emphasizes team building, self-esteem, consciousness and problem solving. Summer Stage! Schaumburg

The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University introduces Summer Stage! musical theatre summer camp, August 11 - 15, 2008 at the RU Schaumburg http://auditoriumtheatre.org/wb/media/camp/THE%204%20GIRLS%201.JPGcampus. Summer Stage! is a one week day camp for children ages 9-13 who love to sing, dance and act. Kids at Summer Stage camp will have daily workshops in musical theatre, drama, music and dance as well as rehearsal for the final show! On Friday, cast members from Summer Stage will perform an original one act mini-musical. This is a great chance to learn about the performing arts, meet new friends and have a lot of fun!

Institute for Continued Learning

As a retired or semi-retired life-long learner aged 50+, you can enjoy a stress-free learning environment in Roosevelt University's Institute for Continued Learning. Participate in a variety of noncredit study groups where there are no exams or grades–but where there is plenty of camaraderie and sharing of knowledge! The Institute offers you study groups, field trips, special events and opportunities to socialize at the Albert A. Robin Schaumburg Campus. Paralegal Studies Program

The premiere paralegal studies program in the Chicago metropolitan area for over 25 years, Roosevelt's Paralegal Studies Program prepares you for an exciting career in the legal field. Whether your goal is to work for a law firm, or a corporation, or to attend law school, this program is for you. Choose from a part-time 3-semester program or an intensive full-time 18-week program. The program is available both for college graduates and as a part of undergraduate degree programs at Roosevelt. External Studies Program

External courses offer an alternative through guided independent study to undergraduate students who do not wish to, or are unable to, attend classes on campus. The external semester is six months long. Study guides (modules) designed for each course present materials that substitute for the lectures in a classroom setting, and Roosevelt faculty members serve as course instructors. Communication between students and instructors may be facilitated by telephone, e-mail or scheduled meetings.

You may review external courses in advance of registration at the Schaumburg Campus Resource Center or at the Chicago Center for Professional Advancement, 18 S. Michigan Avenue. Register at any time during the academic year with the consent of the advisor in your academic program. Students on financial aid probation should not take external studies classes. The Chicago College of Performing Arts

HOPERA 2008

The Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University is proud to announce HOPERA 2008 - a hip hop opera summer music program, July 28th- August 15th. The program specializes in fusing Opera and Hip Hop music. HOPERA exposes young aspiring music artists to classical and urban music while creating a positive outlet for self-expression through the arts. During the three-week program students will write, produce, and perform their own HOPERA (hip hop opera). By participating in HOPERA 2008, students will receive training in the areas of voice, acting, music production, and creative writing. They will also experience workshops conducted by professional Opera and Hip Hop artists. This program is ideal for classical and popular vocalists, spoken word artists, rappers, or students interested in music production. The program tuition is $340.00 for the three-week session. Please note that the scholarship deadline is May 30th and the application deadline is June 6th.

Dance

Lou Conte Dance Studio, 1147 W. Jackson at Racine
Dance classes in ballet, jazz, modern and tap are available to Roosevelt University students at the Lou Conte Dance Studio, home of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. A variety of styles and levels of dance are available in this state-of-the-art facility. It is the student's responsibility to identify him or herself as a Roosevelt University student to the instructor and to come to class prepared with appropriate attire for dance: leotards, tights, and shoes for women; T-shirt, tights, dance belt, and shoes for men. Number of classes per week per session determines credits awarded. Limit 3 credits. Instructor consent required for all classes except Basic. 312-850-9766


Theatre Conservatory

The Theatre Conservatory offers a summer “Fast Track” program for high school teachers of theater. This is a three-year program leading to a Master of Arts degree in Directing.
