Five-year B.A./M.A. Program Description

The sociology faculty at Roosevelt offers an accelerated five-year BA and MA program to eligible students. Students entering this program can earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in sociology in less time than earning these degrees separately would require. Students are accepted into the master’s degree program during in their junior year, begin enrolling in graduate courses in their senior and complete the requirements in the fifth year. Participating students are offered an opportunity to further their academic goals and work closely with faculty who share similar substantive interests and ideas.

To qualify for the five-year B.A./M.A. program in sociology, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a sociology major at Roosevelt University
  • Complete core requirements of sociology major by senior year.
  • have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale and a minimum 3.25 GPA in sociology, with 4 sociology courses taken at time of application.
  • Agree to pursue your M.A. during your fifth year and maintain good standing in master’s level courses.

As undergraduates, eligible students may take up to three graduate level courses which will count toward both the undergraduate and graduate credit requirements. An additional nine graduate courses are necessary to complete the M.A. degree course requirement. The 5-year time frame assumes full-time (3 graduate level courses) per term in 5th year. Benefits of the program include reduction of the time required to complete the M.A. and tuition savings.

Students interested in the five-year B.A./M.A. program in sociology may contact either Dr. Michael Maly, Sociology Department Chair, or any other full-time sociology faculty members.

To apply

  • 1. Complete the application form.
  • 2. Compose an essay of one to two pages describing why you are interested in sociology and what your plans are following the completion of the master’s degree.
