Scholars Program

Students interested in science or medicine who also want to enjoy the benefits of the Roosevelt Scholars Program may participate in the Science Scholars Program. Roosevelt's small, personal classes and laboratories are the ideal setting for this unique academic program. Students attending the Chicago Campus may apply for the Science Scholars Program if they intend to pursue one of the following majors:

  • biology
  • chemistry
  • environmental science
  • allied health (medical technology or nuclear medicine technology)
  • pre-professional programs (pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-veterinary or pre-pharmacy
  • mathematics & actuarial science

The Science Scholars Program offers:

  • an enriched academic program combining interdisciplinary courses in the sciences, humanities and social sciences
  • special honors discussions in core science courses
  • undergraduate research opportunities
  • faculty mentors to guide students through their academic programs and the admissions process for graduate and professional school
  • professional mentors - practicing researchers and physicians - who give students an inside view of life after school
  • internships in hospitals, the biotechnology industry and government agencies, companies and non-profits involved in environmental protection
  • opportunities to work on-campus as a tutor or laboratory assistant
  • generous merit scholarship support (added to need-based financial aid)

The Science Scholars Curriculum

For students entering the Science Scholars Program as freshmen, the curriculum is a ten-course sequence culminating in an honors thesis. Transfer students who enroll in the Scholars Program will have a program tailored specifically for them based upon their previous academic course work. The curriculum includes honors sections of the University general education courses, as well as a variety of unique honors courses focusing on special topics of interest to science majors and pre-medical students.

Science Scholars will take the following honors courses:

  • LIBS 111 Great Ideas I
  • LIBS 112 Great Ideas II
  • BIOL 150 Science as a Way of Knowing
  • ENG 222 Writing About Ideas
  • One Roosevelt Signature Course (either humanities or social studies honors sections)
  • Roots: Development of Great Ideas in Science
  • Bearings: Ethical Reasoning and Practice in the Sciences
  • The Cutting Edge: Science Journal Discussion Seminar
  • Science Practicum (chosen from the following: Health Sciences Hospital Internship, Biotechnology Research Internship, or Environmental Science Internship)
  • Honors Thesis (original laboratory or field-based research under the guidance of a faculty mentor)

In addition, certain core science courses will have separate honors discussion sections. The specific Signature Courses and Seminar Courses offered will vary by semester. Consult each semester’s Class Schedule for the most current listings.
