What is This Camp About?

RUGLAMThe purpose of the camp is to provide an educational enrichment program in science, math and technology; without the stress of homework and tests. The program targets young women who are currently in the 6th through 8th grades in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and who may not currently embrace these subject areas.

The camp this year will have two 1-week sessions; July 21st–25th and July 28th–Aug 1st to allow more girls to attend and have a choice of sessions that best suits their schedule. Attendees will only be able to attend one of the sessions. Our goal is to provide this unique and fun opportunity to 50 students.

We provide hands on experience in the classroom and laboratories at the Schaumburg campus. The girls spend a week during July, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm attending classes taught by our college faculty. We arrange field trips that are appropriate for the theme of the camp. The subject theme for last year’s camp was the pet food contamination scare. The girls worked in small teams to research and determine the best health and overall care for their assigned domestic pet. This year the camp sessions will focus on "The Science of Skin"

Each attendee pays a fee of $125 without lunch provided or $150 with a catered lunch program. We have space for 25 attendees for each session. Last year was our inaugural year and the program was positively received; students are excited about coming back. As you can see from the picture above, the girls were very engaged and really liked being in the labs.

studentsIn addition to the scholastic enrichment, there is a built-in social component from interacting with a diverse group of girls from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Our goal is to make a positive difference in each girl’s life and provide a venue that makes them feel good about themselves; have a better knowledge and appreciation for science, math and technology. Thus the title Roosevelt University "Girls Learning About Mathematics, Outstanding Research, Organizing Unique Solutions using Computers, Science and Investigation".
