Roommate Relations
Residence Life

Living in the residence hall is a huge part of the college experience and can be some of the most challenging!  Here are some tips below that may assist you along the way…

Best Ever Roommate Advice Checklist

  1. Contact your roommate before you move in to introduce yourselves, game plan what each of you will bring, when you're coming …
  2. The day you move-in or within that week, complete a roommate agreement form together. This will assist both of you in setting boundaries and expectations. Forms are available with your RA.
  3. Communication is key! The worst thing you can do is to not communicate or do so in an aggressive manner. It won’t help the situation. Check out tips to communicate effectively below.
  4. Hey, don’t go it alone! RAs are here to help roommates resolve issues. Use them!
  5. Confidentiality is a must! You are not in high school. Respect what is being said and keep it to yourselves.
  6. Building a friendship is no different than building a relationship. It takes work and can be very rewarding. Make time with your roommate weekly catching up on things missed and making plans for evening fun.
  7. Remember that even if you do not get along with your roommate you do not have to love the person but will need to learn to live with him/her.

Tips to Communicate Effectively

  • Talk--Don’t avoid or ignore the problem. It will only get worse!
  • Mediator--Decide if you need one or if you can resolve it on your own.
  • Confidentiality--Commit to keeping the conversation private.
  • “I” Statements--Use “I” rather than the accusation “you.”
  • No Interrupting--Let each other speak without interrupting.
  • Honesty--Acknowledge any wrongdoings on your part and do not agree to anything that you will not be able to uphold.
  • Listen--You cannot undertsand the person if you're trying to talk over him/her.
  • Win-win Solution--Commit to finding a solution best fit for all.
  • RESPECT--No yelling, cursing..Stay calm and keep your volume down.
  • Need Help?--Call on your RA. Your RA is trained to assist.
