Professional Development Workshops
The workshops are 8 week courses designed to merge the professional real estate industry with academia. The workshops are mandatory and currently provided free of charge to scholarship recipients only. Offerings for the workshops will be given once a student is selected as a scholarship recipient. Real Estate Technology I This course will assist students in developing broad knowledge in the effective use of Microsoft Office in their personal and professional lives. This class consists of lecture, discussion, review, and guided practice. Students will complete independent activities, assignments, and projects. The course utilizes a project-oriented approach to achieving computer software awareness in a PC environment, using word processing, spreadsheets, and Internet applications. Students will analyze real-world situations, identify underlying issues and possible solutions, and apply best use of technology and available resources to accomplish tasks and goals. This is not an introductory course in Microsoft Office. Students should have a basic familiarity with the use of microcomputers in a Windows environment. Real Estate Technology II
This course will review key software programs used in the real estate industry such as Skyline, a financial reporting package commonly used in asset and property management, and Argus, a financials modeling tool used in acquisition and development. The course will also review several online research tools, such as Co-star, that contain useful and typically free data that can improve the level and quality of a real estate market analysis assignment. The intent of the class is to strengthen the student's knowledge of analytical tools and sources of data as well as reduce the search time in locating industry information. The result is a student-assembled portfolio of methodology and marketing analysis tools that can be used immediately in the workplace. Real Estate Business Writing Business writing skills are important in every industry; clear and precise written communication in real estate is critical. This course will offer the student the opportunity to review basic grammer and writing rules while applying them to specific real estate issues through the drafting of industry documents such as business letters, memorandums and business proposals. On the first day of class, the students will be issued a real estate dictionary to assist in learning the "language of the trade" and effectively applying this language in the course assignments. Career Development Developing your career can take some time and effort. If this is your first time looking for a job, or if you are looking to change jobs or advance in your current position, you may want to examine your goals, skills and your image. The purpose of this course is to help you identify your work interests and job skills; and set you on the path toward developing a career that is right for you. This course will review the job process, the art of networking, building effective resumes, and interviewing skills. |
