Welcome to the College of Pharmacy at Roosevelt University. What an exciting time to be considering a career in pharmacy! The doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree today can be viewed as the “engineering degree of the health sciences,” allowing graduates the opportunity to pursue and enjoy a multitude of professional opportunities, while ultimately helping patients achieve their desired health outcomes. Pharmaceuticals (both prescription and non-prescription) are the leading health care intervention for patients of all ages in the United States. We anticipate the demand for pharmacists will continue to grow for the next several years.

Our College of Pharmacy embraces a patient-centered curriculum that will produce graduates who are competent, committed and compassionate. Roosevelt University encourages community partnerships and prepares its diverse graduates for responsible citizenship in a global society of which the profession of pharmacy is an integral part. Because of its unique position in higher education, it is anticipated that students enrolling in the PharmD program will be of diverse backgrounds from across the United States.

We are currently recruiting diverse and talented faculty and administrators who will be housed on Roosevelt’s Schaumburg Campus (located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago). Beginning with the first year and continuing throughout the three-year professional program, we will integrate on and off-campus experiences so students can see the relevance of what is being taught on campus.

The new College of Pharmacy will be one of few academic pharmacy programs in the nation to offer the PharmD degree in an accelerated fashion. I have experience with three-year PharmD programs because I developed one back in 1998, when it was one of only two such programs offered nationally. At Roosevelt, we plan to introduce several concentrations of study as the PharmD program develops. These will be in the areas of business administration, educational leadership, information systems/health care informatics and health services management. This approach will allow students to select electives in their course work and internships in their final year that will enhance their preparation to meet the ever-changing demands of the health care marketplace while gaining practical experience.

The University will seek accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and other regional accrediting agencies so the College of Pharmacy’s curriculum will adhere to the Standards and Guidelines for the Professional Program in Pharmacy Leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree as required by ACPE. The college will begin the first step of that process in early 2010 when it submits an application for consideration of the granting pre-candidate status by ACPE. (For more information on the specifics of that process, go to www.acpe-accredit.org).

Thank you for your interest in Roosevelt’s new College of Pharmacy. I invite future students, potential faculty and other interested parties to keep informed of developments at the college by contacting me at gmackinnon@roosevelt.edu and by returning to this site frequently.

Professionally,
George E. MacKinnon III, PhD, RPh, FASHP
