Study Abroad Opportunities at Roosevelt
Roosevelt students may study abroad through an approved exchange program, an independent study abroad program or a faculty-led international study program. Each program differs in the structure of tuition payment and how financial aid is applied to the program. During the summer of 2007, seven Roosevelt students studied in Austria, Ecuador, Egypt, Italy and United Kingdom. They all had a wonderful experience and obtained RU credits for the courses they took. During this current semester, we have four students studying in Australia, Finland, and United Kingdom as exchange students, four students enrolled in a variety of study abroad programs in Scotland, Spain and United Kingdom. The most exciting news is that eight students will travel abroad with Dr. Vicky McKinley, Professor of Biology, to Belize for eight days in December. This trip is an integral part of a course, BIOL-323: Tropical Belize, that the students are taking during the Fall 2007 semester.
Study abroad can be highly affordable, and there are many scholarship opportunities available. Students eligible for financial aid can apply some or all of their aid awards towards study abroad programs. Please encourage your student to apply to study abroad. For more information, please contact Rubee Li Fuller, Director of International Programs, at 312-341-2128 or rfuller@roosevelt.edu.
Spring Break Service Trip
When Roosevelt graduate student Katie Mason first visited the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota as a volunteer last spring, she was appalled by the poverty and deplorable living conditions that she saw. Six months later, Mason is still so moved by the experience that she is organizing a second volunteer trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in March 2008 with RU students. The plans are being made under the supervision of Cindy Anderson, assistant professor of special education in the College of Education. More information >>
Introducing the Professional Connections Initiative (PCI)!
The PCI is the coordinated effort of the Roosevelt University Office of Career Services to facilitate professional connections for RU students and alumni. This initiative incorporates a number of different functions of Career Services in order to support and educate RU students in their professional development.
One aspect of the PCI is the eRecruiting database that allows students and alumni to access a network of professionals from various fields and at various levels who have offered to share their knowledge and experience to benefit others from the Roosevelt University community. As parents of Roosevelt students, you are valuable members of our community and you are invited to participate in the PCI mentor database.
As a mentor you will be able to control the number of students who receive your contact information. You may also choose what activities you would like to offer students, such as informational interviewing, job shadowing and mock interviews. The Career Services staff are also looking for mentors who are willing to present on Roosevelt career panels and participate in Roosevelt networking events.
If you are interested in PCI or would like additional information, please contact Tamar Frolichtstein-Appel, Career Counselor, at 312-341-2091 or tfrolichsteinappel@roosevelt.edu
Senator Durbin on Campus

Roosevelt students Jessica Salazar and Roosevelt Haywood wait to speak at a press conference U.S. Senator Dick Durbin recently held at the University. The students explained how important financial aid and Pell Grants are in financing their educations. During the press conference, Senator Durbin called on President Bush to approve the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, which provides $20 billion in additional college aid and includes a provision to cut student interest rates in half. To learn more about the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007, visit Senator Durbin’s website. You will find the article by clicking the “next “button located under “Today’s Hot Topics.”
A Taste of RU

Students at the Schaumburg Campus take advantage of the warm temperatures and the recently refurbished Community Courtyard. The Center for Campus Life hosted "A Taste of RU" program to highlight student organizations, activities, campus offices and other resources for students.
Community Service Fair

The Center for Student Involvement in Chicago recently hosted a Community Service Fair so Roosevelt students could learn about volunteering opportunities. Allan Bradley (second from right) of Midwest Workers Association is shown talking to a student about becoming a volunteer with his organization.
