Networking Breaking Down Your Network Close to 80% of jobs are obtained through networking. To be competitive in the market, you need to make networking a big piece of your job search. Networking is the reciprocal process of making connections and developing relationship. Your network is made of up of friends, family, past colleagues, and acquaintances. However, your goal should be to constantly expand that network by identifying individuals within your potential career and making connections. Not everyone communicates the same way. Make the contact in the way that you feel comfortable. Phone or face to face is ideal, but email and postal mail are also appropriate. Everywhere and anywhere there is an opportunity to network. It doesn’t just have to be in a professional setting. It is all about having conversations and making connections. Try to put yourself in situations where you will be able to meet people in your field. Join a professional association, attend conferences, receptions, volunteer within the organization or at its events. What do you want your new contacts to know? Strategize and prepare your introduction. You should be able to cover it in two minutes or less. Be respectful of their time. Online networking has become very popular. Find websites that provide opportunities for e-networking. Remember who you have met. Collect business cards and follow-up where appropriate. Have a record keeping-system if that will help. Know what you want to talk about. Be aware of current topics in the field or do research on the individuals you will be meeting. Avoid gossip or name dropping. It is a relationship. Networking is not just about you and what you can get out of the conversation. Be willing to help others where you can. Non-verbal communication is as important as what you are saying. A nice smile and a good handshake go a long way. Get going! This isn’t going to happen for you. Your competition is out there networking, you need to do the same.
