Parents and Families of Roosevelt Students
Career Services
The Office of Career Services at Roosevelt University is designed to assist students with their educational and career goals. From the first steps of selecting a major to building a solid foundation for their career, Career Services offers students comprehensive support. |
 |
Research shows that parents and family support systems effect student career values and goals. Recognizing this, the Office of Career Services encourages families to support students through this exciting time in their career development process and offers the following suggestions to assist in that process:
- Get the dialogue started. Ask your student about her or his likes, dislikes, strengths and goals. As challenging as it may seem, try to refrain from suggesting or selecting his or her major. It has been shown that the people who are the most successful in life work in a field that they truly enjoy.
- Talk about your experiences. Students look to their families to model professional growth. Share how you chose your career, what worked and what you would do differently.
- Suggest that your student contact the Office of Career Services early on in their academic career. The office has services that benefit students at all levels. Making the connection early will help your student understand how the office operates and will encourage them to take advantage of everything that is available.
- Urge your student to consider an internship, volunteer activity or a part-time job in their field. Career-related exprience will help your student explore opportunities, gain valuable skills, and network for the furture. Our experienced career advisors can assist students in gaining practical hands-on opportunities.
- Encourage your student to participate in at least one student organization. This involvement helps develop skills that employers value and look for when interviewing job applicants and will help students further explore where their interests may lie.
Roosevelt University takes pride in its efforts to provide a quality education to its students and to assist students as they make their way in the working world. Encourage your students to take full advantage of this service.
