Graduation

“Each year, more than one million students enter the work force. Think of the impact on our society if even a significant minority of applicants and job holders inquired about or attempted to change the ethical practices of their potential or current employers.”

-Manchester College, Coordinating College

The Background

Founded at Humboldt State University in California and adopted by Roosevelt University in 2006, the Graduation Pledge Alliance serves as a serious commitment for reflection and action.

Manchester College coordinates the efforts of this campaign that is dedicated to raising the social and environmental awareness among college graduates.

Whether or not you decide to take the pledge is a personal choice. It is up to you to determine what you consider to be socially and environmentally responsible and how you want to incorporate this commitment into your career planning, career choices, job search and professional life.

Things to Consider

  • How do you link your personal values with your professional life?
  • How do you define social and environmental responsibility?
  • What is most important to you in your job search?
  • What questions do you need to ask and actions do you need to take to find the right opportunity for you during your search?
  • What will you do if you spot an social or environmental injustice in your organization?

Socially Conscious Job Search Suggestions

Research socially and environmentally responsible occupations and employers.

There are a variety of resources available to help you research organizations. Visit the Graduation Pledge Alliance website for ideas or set an appointment to visit with a career counselor at Roosevelt.

Learn the questions to ask in the interview.

  • What is the organization’s mission and how is it implemented into the operations of the organization?
  • Are there child care programs, dependent care, employee assistance programs?
  • What are the benefits and who is eligible?
  • Are there opportunities for community service and what is the organizations overall approach to community relations?
  • What is the organization’s record on occupational health and safety? Waste handling?
  • What efforts have been made to minimize waste from the organization?
  • How does the organization hold itself and its employees accountable for these expectations?
Periodically check to make sure you continue to live these values in your professional life.
Create a personal values checklist. How will you know if you are reaching your goals.
