On-Campus Employment
F-1 students who are maintaining status http://roosevelt.edu/isa/f1_status.htm may work on-campus. Employment is limited to no more than 17 hours per week at all times as per Roosevelt University’s labor union contract.

1. FIND ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
It is the student’s responsibility to find an on-campus job.
- Ask returning students and professors if they know of any job openings.
- Visit offices that regularly hire international students:

2. REQUEST WORK AUTHORIZATION FROM THE OFFICE
OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS (OIP)
- Students have two options to apply to work authorization:

- Complete the Work Authorization form in OIP. The International Student Advisor will complete the form within 3 business days which students may pick up in the office.
3. APPLY FOR A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (SSN)
- Students who already have a SSN can go straight to #4.
- Students who are working for the first time in the U.S. must obtain a Social Security Number for tax purposes. When requesting work authorization, also make a letter request for a Social Security letter (link to letter form). This form is also available in OIP. The International Student Advisor will complete the letter at the same time as completing the work authorization.
- Take the following documents to the Social Security Administration office Local Office Search:
- Job offer letter from supervisor
- Social Security letter from OIP
- Passport (including visa stamp and I-94 card)
- I-20
- You will be issued an “applied for SSN” letter. The SSN Card will arrive in the mail 4-6 weeks after the application date. Make sure to bring your SSN card to Human Resources when you receive it!
4. FILL OUT EMPLOYMENT FORMS
- After obtaining an “applied for SSN” letter, visit the Human Resources office to fill out paperwork. You will not receive a paycheck until you have done this. Remember: Once you receive the SSN card, take it back to Human Resources to make a photocopy.
