Maintaining F-1 Status

 

Please note:

  1. The Office of International Programs is abbreviated as OIP.
  2. All OIP requests (employment authorization, travel signature, etc.) will be completed within 3 business days.  Students must pick up their documents in OIP unless other arrangements are requested.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

 

DOCUMENTATION

  • Passport cannot expire
  • I-20 cannot expire until student finishes program requirements (Program Extension form)
  • Keep all current and old I-20s in a safe place
  • Visa stamp can expire, but must be renewed before re-entering the U.S. if student travels
  • Notify OIP with any change of address within 10 days of moving (I HAVE MOVED form).
  • Contact OIP if passport (including visa stamp), I-20, or I-94 card is lost. 

ENROLLMENT

AND

ACADEMICS

  • Maintain full-time enrollment:
  1. Minimum of 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students
  2. Minimum of 9 credit hours per semester for graduate students
  • Request authorization from OIP to drop below full-time enrollment (under 9 for graduate; under 12 for undergraduate) before dropping any classes.  Students may be under-enrolled only for very specific reasons – please see the Below Credit Authorization form for more information (Below Credit Authorization form)
  • Notify OIP of any changes in academic program (major or minor, degree level, length of program, termination of studies, etc.)
  • Notify OIP of any plans to transfer to another college/university.  Submit admission letter, transfer form, start date of new program, and transfer out questionnaire (TransferOut form).

EMPLOYMENT

  • Obtain work authorization (for on-campus work and Curricular Practical Training) from the OIP for every semester and every break period during which you intend to work. 
  • Work no more than 17 hours per week on-campus (as per Roosevelt University’s labor agreement).
  • Never work off-campus without authorization from OIP or United States Customs and Immigrations Services (USCIS). 
  • Off-campus employment through Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Economic Hardship requires approval from USCIS.  Curricular Practical Training (CPT) requires authorization from OIP prior to beginning employment.  It is the student’s responsibility to obtain authorization before beginning employment; failure to do so is a violation of F-1 status. 
  • Authorized off-campus employment (Economic hardship eco hardship info or Curricular Practical Training internship can be no more than 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semester; full-time (40 hours) employment is restricted to breaks (including summer term). 

TRAVEL

  • Before traveling outside of the U.S., request a travel signature for your I-20 at least two weeks before the departure date. 
  • As noted above, the F-1 passport visa stamp must be current when re-entering the U.S.  (F-1 visa stamps cannot be renewed within the U.S.)
