Mission
Institute for Metropolitan Affairs

430 S. Michigan
Suite 1756
Chicago, IL 60605-1394

Kathleen Kane-Willis, Interim Director

The Institute for Metropolitan Affairs is the unit within Roosevelt University chiefly responsible for applying university resources to the solution of public policy problems facing the Chicago metropolitan area. The Institute is committed to eventually working equally with city and suburbs, thereby facilitating the integration of Roosevelt’s two campuses, and promoting the university’s identity as a single entity operating in the Chicago region.

The Institute works primarily in the fields of social welfare, drug policy, and regional affairs. Work in social welfare includes the fields of poverty studies, race relations, social services, education and community development, fields consistent with Roosevelt’s historic identification and traditions. Drug policy work focuses on issues such as alternatives to incarceration and expansion of treatment services. Regional work focuses on problems affecting the Chicago region as a whole, or suburbs located within a sub-area of the Chicago region. The Institute is responsive to the research interests of faculty members.

The Institute advances its mission through a number of vehicles. These include:

  • Contracts with institutions, local government, agencies and others interested in university-based research of questions affecting public affairs.
  • Grants from foundations that support the research interests of university faculty or Institute staff.
  • Small grants from the Institute to individual Roosevelt faculty members supportive of their research.
  • Conferences, workshops and seminars where research of interest to scholars, practitioners, elected officials or the general public is presented.
  • Assistance to teaching including providing lectures to classes, data, seminars, facilitation of independent studies and curriculum development.
  • Employment of Roosevelt students on research projects and opportunities for work-study students to work in the area of public affairs.
