Separation from Service
Policies and Procedures | Human Resources

Voluntary

An employee who intends to leave the university’s employment, is expected to follow the following procedures:

  • Though all administrative appointments are at-will, administrators are asked to provide at least one month notice of voluntary separation.
  • The resignation letter should be addressed and submitted to the supervisor with a copy to the Office of Human Resources at the beginning of the notice period.
  • For administrative employees, the last day that you actually work is your last date of employment. If you have accumulated vacation time, you may not use these days to extend your actual last date of employment. If you are eligible, you will receive pay for these days.
  • For full-time faculty, your last date of employment is the date your annual contract ends, generally August 14 of each year.
  • Upon receipt of your letter of resignation in the Office of Human Resources, a separation notice will be sent to you giving you details about the "exit interview" you will have in the Office of Human Resources on your last day of employment, the items you will need to return to the University (such as keys, ID card, benefits handbook, etc.), the distribution of your final pay check, and other important insurance matters. Specific questions about the separation process can be directed to the Office of Human Resources.

Involuntary

On rare occasions, the University may find it necessary to terminate employment. In these instances, as much advance notice as possible will be provided to the employee. Where advance notice is not possible, severance pay will be provided in lieu of notice, if the termination is not for cause or gross misconduct on the part of the employee. All employees terminated involuntarily will also have an "exit interview" in the Office of Human Resources on their last day of employment or as soon thereafter as possible. (See last paragraph of Voluntary Separation of Service Section above).
