Sick Leave of Absence
Full-time Faculty | Human Resources

Faculty and administrative employees who have at least six (6) months and less than one (1) year of continuous, full time service at Roosevelt University are eligible for unpaid sick leave of absence. If you have at least one year of continuous, full time service at Roosevelt University, please refer to the short term disability policy.

Should you have a serious, medical condition requiring a minimum of 10 continuous days of absence, you may apply for unpaid sick leave. Intermittent absence due to illness or injury is not eligible for unpaid leave under this policy. The benefit for qualified, unpaid sick leave is a maximum of 12 weeks of unpaid leave during the 6-month eligibility period described in the first paragraph of this policy.

The University’s long term disability insurance carrier determines your medical eligibility for unpaid sick leave based on required information provided by you and your attending physician(s). This leave administrator, not Roosevelt University, reviews all sick leave information and then informs the University if you are eligible for excused absence. If you fail to provide the required information for eligibility determination in a timely manner, related absence will be considered unexcused and may result in separation of employment.

If you are qualified for an unpaid sick leave, you are responsible for paying the total premium for all fringe benefits in which you are enrolled. University contributions to your retirement plan for which you are eligible will discontinue while on qualified unpaid sick leave. You are not eligible for tuition remission and do not accrue any paid vacation days while on unpaid sick leave.

If you return to work for a period of two weeks or less and must go out again due to the same serious health condition, you may be re-certified for unpaid sick leave to begin immediately.

If you are eligible for leave due to a serious health condition under the Family and Medical Leave Act, you will be required to submit a Certificate of Health Care Provider with the required sick leave forms. FMLA will run concurrently with any qualified sick leave of absence.
