Short Term Disability
Full-time Faculty | Human Resources

Faculty and administrative employees are eligible for this benefit following one (1) year of continuous, full time service at Roosevelt University.* New employees who had comparable coverage with their previous employer for at least one year may have this eligibility period waived with proof of previous coverage.

Should you have a serious, long-term medical condition requiring a minimum of 10 continuous days of absence, you may apply for short term disability. Intermittent absence due to illness or injury is not eligible for paid leave under this policy. The benefit for qualified, short term disability is as follows:

First 90 days of consecutive absence 100% of base salary
Second 90 days of consecutive absence 80% of base salary

The maximum short term disability benefit is 90 days of payments at 100% of base salary and 90 days of payments at 80% of base salary in a rolling 12-month period.

The University’s long term disability insurance carrier determines your medical eligibility for short term disability benefits based on required information provided by you and your attending physician(s). This short term disability administrator, not Roosevelt University, reviews all disability information and then informs the University if you are eligible for qualified short term disability payments. If you fail to provide the required information for eligibility determination in a timely manner, related absence will be considered unexcused and may result in separation of employment.

If you are qualified for short term disability benefits, you are responsible for the regular employee contributions/premiums for fringe benefits that you pay when not on leave. Any University contributions to your retirement plan for which you are eligible will continue while on qualified short term disability leave.

If you return to work for a period of two weeks or less and must go out again due to the same serious health condition, you may be re-certified for short term disability payments to begin immediately.

If you are eligible for leave due to a serious health condition under the Family and Medical Leave Act, you will be required to submit a Certificate of Health Care Provider with the required short term disability forms. FMLA will run concurrently with any qualified short term disability leave.

* Please refer to the “Disability Eligibility-Employees with Job Status Change” policy for exceptions to this eligibility standard.
