Retiring Employees
Human Resources

Retiring employees (age 62 or older) with more than one but less than five years of continuous full time employment may convert their insurance to an individual policy if they are not yet eligible for Medicare coverage. Retiring employees with more than 5 years of continuous full time employment may, as an alternative to conversion, choose to remain on the University's health plan, on a reimbursement basis. Eligible dependents may also be covered under the plan while the employee is living. Coverage cannot be reinstated if subsequently dropped. Dependents acquired after retirement cannot be covered.

In addition to the above policy, the following policy will be available to full time faculty and administrators:

Full time faculty and administrators between the ages of 50 and 62 whose age and years of service combined are 75 or more as of the date of the employee's retirement or separation from the university without cause OR whose age and service will total 75 as of the last day of the employee's current annual contract, may choose to remain on the university's health plan on a reimbursement basis, limited to the same family status as existed at the time of separation. Coverage cannot be reinstated if subsequently dropped. Dependents acquired after separation cannot be covered.

Faculty and administrators on annual contracts must have substantially fulfilled their current contract at the time of retirement or separation to be considered for this benefit.

For faculty, the date of contract fulfillment would be the end of the Spring semester. For administrators, this date would normally be August 31. However, the university, at its discretion, could release administrators as early as May 15 (the end of Spring semester) if the administrators have, in the university's judgment, substantially fulfilled their current contract.

Should a full time faculty or administrator who meets the eligibility requirements specified above accept other employment where health care benefits are available, this provision will not apply.
