Dental Benefit

Human Resources

Full time faculty, administrators and clerical union employees are eligible for single or family coverage in the dental insurance plans offered by the University. Part time clerical union employees are eligible for single dental coverage only. If elected, dental coverage begins on the first of the month following your date of employment.

The University offers a choice of dental insurance plans with a provider contracted for a policy (plan) year of May 1 to April 30. Detailed information on the plans currently available and the coverage provided by each are detailed in copyament schedule (Advantage) and the PPO benefit highlight sheet:

This is a voluntary dental plan. Employee premiums are made through payroll deduction on a pre-tax basis as allowed under Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Service regulations. You pay the full monthly premium for your dental insurance coverage. If you have a domestic partner, the employee premium for your dependent is a post tax withholding. Please refer to the domestic partner policy for additional tax information on dental insurance premiums. Current employee premium rates are available on the Human Resources web page and by request. Employee contributions are generally subject to change each May 1.

You may enroll (if you previously waived coverage) or change your plan and/or coverage type during the annual open enrollment period. Open enrollment is held in March for the plan year of May 1 to April 30. All enrollment and/or changes to coverage must be completed on the required form available from Human Resources.

Dental enrollment is a plan-year commitment. Generally, you may not cancel or change your coverage during the plan year. There is one circumstance that allows you to change your coverage outside of the annual open enrollment period:

  • Qualifying event: You may enroll or change from individual to family coverage or add dependents if you experience a “qualifying event.” Qualifying events include marriage, birth or adoption of a child, obtaining legal custody of a child prior to adoption, establishment of a domestic partnership or termination of your previous dental insurance coverage under another group plan that you state in writing was the reason that you declined enrollment in the University plan. You must apply for a change within 31 days of the “qualifying event” and your coverage will be effective from the date of the event. If you do not make application for the family coverage or additional dependents within the allotted time, you will have to wait until the open enrollment period noted above.
