Group Term Life/Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance Full time faculty, administrative and clerical union employees are eligible for this benefit on the first day of the month following date of employment. The University pays the entire premium for group term life/accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance. The group life/AD&D benefit is equal to 100% of your base salary (also know as “one times earnings”) as of May 1 each year that you are eligible. The coverage is rounded to the next higher multiple of $1,000. The minimum benefit is $25,000 and the maximum benefit is $150,000. The life insurance plan also includes additional benefit for accidental death and dismemberment. Depending on the circumstances, the AD&D benefit may equal the group term life benefit. The premium on life insurance policies with a benefit that is equal to or exceeds $50,000 is a taxable fringe benefit to you under Internal Revenue Service guidelines. If your benefit meets this standard, the adjusted gross income on your paycheck will be increased by the taxable premium to meet the tax-withholding requirement. You may elect, at your own expense, to continue your life insurance coverage upon retirement or termination of employment. The plan provider determines your eligibility for the portability and conversion options as well as the premium that you will have to pay for this coverage. Please refer to "Your Group Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Plan" certificate booklet for further information regarding this benefit or click here to view this certificate booklet online (PDF, 102K).
