Health Insurance Options
Human Resources

Full time faculty, administrators and clerical union employees are eligible for single or family coverage in the health insurance plans offered by the University. Part time clerical union employees are eligible for single health coverage only. If elected, health coverage begins on the first of the month following your date of employment.

The University offers a choice of health insurance plans with a provider contracted for a policy (plan) year of May 1 to April 30. Detailed information on the plans currently available and the coverage provided by each are detailed in summary plan descriptions and benefit highlight sheets (available via the Human Resources web page). Certificate booklets are given upon enrollment and as updated by Human Resources.

Employee contributions are made through payroll deduction on a pre-tax basis as allowed under Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Service regulations. The University pays the balance of the premium for your health insurance on your behalf. If you have a domestic partner, the employee contribution for your dependent is a post tax withholding. Please refer to the domestic partner policy for additional tax information on health insurance premiums. Current employee contribution rates are available on the Human Resources web page and by request. Employee contributions are generally subject to change each May 1.

You may enroll (if you previously waived coverage) or change your plan and/or coverage type during the annual open enrollment period. Open enrollment is held in March for the plan year of May 1 to April 30. All enrollment and/or changes to coverage must be completed on the required form available from Human Resources.

There are two circumstances that allow you to change your coverage outside of the annual open enrollment period:

  • Qualifying event: You may enroll or change from individual to family coverage or add dependents if you experience a “qualifying event.” Qualifying events include marriage, birth or adoption of a child, obtaining legal custody of a child prior to adoption, establishment of a domestic partnership or termination of your previous health insurance coverage under another group plan that you state in writing was the reason that you declined enrollment in the University plan. You must apply for a change within 31 days of the “qualifying event” and your coverage will be effective from the date of the event. If you do not make application for the family coverage or additional dependents within the allotted time, you will have to wait until the open enrollment period noted above.
  • Coverage reduction: You may reduce your coverage (change from family to single or cancel your health coverage) at the end of any calendar month. You must complete a change form and submit to Human Resources at least four weeks prior to the effective date of the change. You may re-enroll or increase coverage during open enrollment or if you experience a qualifying event.
