Master of Arts
History

The Masters in History serves students with the following objectives:

  • Teaching history at the secondary level or in community colleges
  • Preparation for Ph.D. studies
  • Preparation for government positions or other types of work requiring advanced study of history

Available Fields of Concentration

  • U.S. History to 1877
  • U.S. History since 1877
  • African-American History
  • World History
  • European History
  • Special fields carrying program and faculty approval

Admission

Applicants should apply for admission through the graduate admissions office. In addition to the application and undergraduate transcrips, an applicant must furnish an essay on a question provided by the admissions office, and two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant's academic work.

Requirements

The Masters in History is available in Thesis and Non-Thesis options. All students must take History 401, Introduction to Graduate Studies and History 450, Graduate Seminar in History, and pass a three hour written examination in two areas of concentration. With prior approval, up to three courses may be taken outside of history.

Non-Thesis option:

  • 36 semester hours of course work at 400-level

Thesis option:

  • 30 semester hours of course work at 400-level
  • Completion of History 490, the Thesis (3 semester hours) on an approved topic
