BPS/BGS Basics
BPS/BGS | Evelyn T. Stone College of Professional Studies

Both BPS and BGS degrees replace general education courses and electives with innovative general education seminars.  These interdisciplinary seminars and a senior thesis research project are designed specifically for the adult learner and reduce the time required to complete the degree requirements.  Here are the basic requirements for all BGS/BPS students.

                                            books

button copy  Introductory Course

The first course in the BGS and BPS programs is designed to help students adapt to college-level work and to Roosevelt University, and to ensure their success in subsequent courses.  Depending on the amount of previous college work, students take either the Pro-Seminar in Critical Skills, which focuses on critical reading and thinking, expository writing, and research skills, or Methods of Critical Reasoning, an advanced research course.

  • BGS 201 Pro-Seminar in Critical Skills (for students with less than 60 hours of transfer credit) (6) or BGS 302 Methods of Critical Reasoning (for students with  more than 60 hours of transfer credit or an Associates Degree in Arts or Science) (3)
  • BGS 290 Seminar in Technological and Quantitative Literacy (3)

University-wide requirements in English and mathematics help students achieve the competence in communication and in quantitative analysis necessary for success in school and in the world of work.  The Roosevelt University Assessment Exam (RUA) will help determine which if any courses are needed in these areas.

button copy  Academic Majors

More than 20 academic majors in a variety of professional and liberal arts fields are available through BGS and BPS.  Strong preparation in a focused field of study gives graduates a competitive edge in the job market and for placement in graduate or professional school.  Click here to see a full list of majors.

Small, interactive seminars in the Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Humanities provide students with a comprehensive body of knowledge and skills. A program adviser can help you determine if transfer credits can exempt you from one or more of these seminars.

  • BGS 390  Seminar in the Social Sciences (6)
  • BGS 391  Seminar in the Natural Sciences (6)
  • BGS 392  Seminar in the Humanities (6)

Students may waive one BGS Senior Seminar with nine semester hours of appropriate transferable credit with at least a 2.0 average in a single seminar area; students with an Associates Degree in Arts or Science may waive tow Senior Seminars.

This final course in the BGS and BPS programs is a guided research project on a topic of interest to the student. This project helps students integrate the varied components of their educational experience, reflect upon their chosen area of study, and many students find it an excellent preparation for graduate study.

Other requirements of all BPS/BGS degree seekers:

button copy Students must be 24 years of age when they start the program, except those holding an Associate's Degree in Applied Sciences (AAS).

button copy Students must have 30 semester hours of credit at Roosevelt and a 2.0 grade point average to graduate.

button copy Students must successfully complete a minimum of nine semester hours at the 300 level in the major at Roosevelt.
