Scholars Teach and Reach (S.T.A.R) Scholarship Program
College of Education

A major goal of the College of Education of Roosevelt University is producing classroom leaders for the 21st century who are committed to their profession. Significant scholarship support is available for students who are academically strong, have a desire in becoming a teacher, and have an interest in attending Roosevelt University. Therefore, the College of Education is currently seeking high school seniors from Chicago Public Schools, particularly minority students who do well academically and are interested in becoming early childhood, elementary, secondary, music, or theater arts teachers.

Process

This scholarship opportunity is available to high school seniors from Chicago Public Schools who meet the following criteria

  • Have a commitment to becoming a teacher
  • Have a 3.25 grade point average or excel in a special area, such as mathematics, science, foreign language, or performing arts
  • Have a minimum ACT composite score of 18
  • Have two teacher recommendations
  • Participate in an interview conducted by the College of Education Scholarship Committee and a committee of current S.T.A.R. students
  • Complete an essay question that is related to education
  • Have a desire to attend Roosevelt University

Roosevelt University's liaison will work closely with the schools' principals, counselors, and applicants to coordinate the process of application and acceptance.

A mentor-advisor will be assigned to work with each group of recipients each year.

For each incoming group of recipients, the following activities will occur

  • Formal kick-off celebration
  • One overnight orientation

Conditions

  • All recipients must enroll in Freshmen Seminar, both semesters, conducted by the College of Education.
  • Students must maintain a 3.25 GPA each year.
  • All recipients must become active members of Future Teachers of Chicago/Illinois.
  • Freshmen and sophomore students must attend a minimum of two educational programs/functions each year. Junior and senior students must attend a minimum of four educational programs/functions each year.
  • During the second semester of the freshman year, students must complete 30 clock hours of tutoring in a Chicago grammar school.

Award

  • Students receive an academic scholarship of varying amounts to cover tuition and fee.
  • All students will need to fill out the standard financial aid form- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
