Subject Area Requirements Within Majors for Certification
Secondary Education - Master of Arts
Secondary Education | College of Education

Standards of academic competence are established and administered jointly by the major programs and the College of Education. Students who completed their work in their major field at other universities must demonstrate that their preparation is equivalent to that required in Roosevelt University programs.

Areas of Certification

Biology and Chemistry

All Roosevelt University requirements for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Biology or Chemistry must be met (see Undergraduate Catalog for specific requirements).

All students must complete a major in one of the above fields (40 - 42 semester hours).  In each of the fields, the student is required to complete, at minimum, the following course work for certification:

  • A minimum of 8 semester hours in the biological sciences
  • 15 semester hours in chemistry, including full year coursework in general chemistry and organic chemistry that incorporates a quantitative laboratory experience
  • 8 semester hours in physics
  • Course work that considers the connections among the sciences and the impact of science and technology on society and the environment.
  • Mathematics course work that includes, at minimum, college algebra, pre-calculus and statistics

Business, Marketing, and Computer Education

A student must establish that he/she has equivalence to a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Roosevelt University (See College of Business Administration advisor and Undergraduate Catalog). The requirements for a major in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management or Marketing in the Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration are determined by an advisor in the College of Education who will consult with Faculty in the College of Business if there are uncertainties relative to establishing that all required courses are completed.

The course requirements of Roosevelt’s B S in Business Administration qualifies the student for teaching basic business and accounting/finance.  Students are strongly encouraged to take additional coursework to establish competence in computer technology and applications.

Minimum – 33 s.h.

English

All Roosevelt University requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English must be met (see the Undergraduate Catalog).

The requirements for a major in English in the College of Arts and Sciences include the following course work:

In general education (hours are not included to fulfill major)
   
Rhetoric and composition 6 s.h.
Oral communications 3 s.h.
Non-print media 3 s.h.
   
In literary studies and writing  
Literary analysis 3 s.h.
Shakespeare 3 s.h.
British literature 6 s.h
American literature 6 s.h.
U.S. ethnic or 3rd world authors 3 s.h.
Women authors 3 s.h.
Elective course work in English 12 s.h.
(If offered at RU, one elective must be English Language study)  
Minimum - 36 s. h.

Note: Students desiring to teach Theater at the high school level can obtain an endorsement in Theater with 24 – 32 hours of guided electives.  Students who have a major in theater and would like to teach theater should contact Dr. Hilve Firek (Schaumburg) or Dr. Linda Pincham (Chicago) for advising.

Social Studies

All Roosevelt University requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, Sociology, Political Sciences or Economics must be met (see Undergraduate Catalog).

All students must complete a major in one of the above social studies majors (33 semester hours) with survey courses in world history (6 semester hours) and United States history (6 semester hours) and 12 semester hours of course work at the 300 level.

In addition, to gain representation across social studies disciplines, all students must include the following course work in completing their degree:

  • 3 semester hours in Women's studies
  • 3 semester hours in American Government
  • 3 semester hours in cross cultural anthropology or regional history or geography
  • 3 semester hours in macroeconomics
  • 3 semester hours in either psychology or sociology

Minimum – 45 s.h.

Mathematics

All Roosevelt University requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics must be met (see Mathematics division advisor and Undergraduate Catalog).  In addition, specific course work related to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics accreditation must be completed.

The requirement of the undergraduate major in Mathematics in the College of Arts and Science is a minimum of 36 semester hours that includes the following course work:

HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS  
   
  Minimum. - 36 s.h.

NOTE:  A second teaching area totaling 24-32 semester hours of guided electives in English, Social Studies, foreign languages or music are selected in consultation with a faculty advisor
