Program of Study
Secondary Education - Master of Arts
Secondary Education | College of Education

Students must meet all requirements listed below under General Education, Professional Education and Area of Specialization (See Subject Areas for specifics) and successfully complete the content area test of the Illinois Certification Testing System in the subject that the student is seeking certification in prior to enrolling in SEED 460, Student Teaching and Seminar in the Secondary School.

General Education Requirements

Students must provide transcripts for a secondary education adviser to determine which courses are acceptable toward fulfillment of the State of Illinois general education requirements:

Communication Skills 6 s.h.

Written Communication

Mathematics  (must be above Math 100) 3 s.h.

Science  6 s.h. (one course in each)

Biological Science

Physical Science

Humanities 9 s.h.

(history, English, literature, foreign language, fine arts, linguistics, philosophy)

American History*

Social Science 9 s.h.

(political science, economics, cultural geography, history, psychology, sociology)

American Government*

Non-Western/3rd World 3 s.h.

(Humanities or Social Science course-Asia, Africa, Central or South America or Native American; can also be counted in Humanities or Social Science)

*Students may complete either American history or American Government contingent on having minimum hours in humanities and social sciences

Professional Education Sequence Program of Study (36 semester hours)

Six courses (26 semester hours) are required in the professional education sequence prior to certification. Note that SEED 401, SEED 450, and SEED 460 are offered only in the fall and spring semesters and they are sequenced course work (i.e., SEED 401 must be completed prior to enrollment in SEED 450)

  • SEED 401 Seminar in Secondary Education (4 hrs)
  • READ 463 Teaching Language and Literacy in Content Areas (3 hrs)
  • EDUC 407 Topics and Issues in Human Development (3 hrs)
  • SEED 450 Field Experience in Secondary Education (4 hrs)
  • SPED 419 Exceptional Children and Youth (3 hrs)

Methods of Teaching in Major Field (Select one with advisor) (3 hrs)

  • SEED 421 Methods of Teaching Secondary Business Education
  • SEED 422 Methods of Teaching Secondary Science
  • SEED 423 Methods of Teaching Middle School and Secondary Mathematics
  • SEED 426 Methods of Teachings Secondary Social Studies
  • SEED 427 Methods of teaching Secondary English

Student Teaching (6 hrs)

  • SEED 460 Student Teaching and Seminar in the Secondary School (6 hrs)

Initial masters candidates are required to complete two courses, in addition to those required for certification, in order to complete their master’s degree: one course in multicultural perspectives in education (select either EDUC 449, EDUC 459, CHS 411, or EDUC 452) as well as EDUC 480.  Each is to be selected in consultation with an advisor.

Total: 32 hours
