Secondary Education | College of Education

In order to qualify for Roosevelt University's recommendation for the secondary teaching certificate, students must meet all requirements, including general education work specified by the Illinois State Board of Education, that are in effect at the time of their application. Students must complete 100 hours of classroom observation as condition of being admitted to student teaching. Student teaching is a requirement of certification that cannot be waived by the College of Education under any circumstances. The certification officer meets with students during student teaching seminar to explain the certification process and provide guidance on filing for certification.

Students intending to teach in the middle school (grades 6-8) are required by the State of Illinois to complete additional course work in adolescent development and foundations of the middle school.

The Illinois State Board of Education also requires satisfactory scores on the Illinois Certification Testing System 1) Basic Skills test, 2) the content test in the subject area that the teacher candidate is seeking certification for, and 3) the Assessment of Professional Teaching test. Basic skills is completed as a condition for admission to graduate study, the content test is completed as a condition for admission to student teaching and the APT is required as a condition of recommendation for certification.

Students are eligible to apply for Roosevelt University's recommendation for the secondary teaching certificate if all the following conditions are met:

  1. All requirements for the major are satisfied
  2. All general education coursework has been completed.
  3. All other professional education requirements, including student teaching, clinical hours, and successful performance on the ICTS have been completed.

In Illinois a person who holds a state high school certificate may be endorsed to teach additional subjects meeting the minimum requirements of 24 semester hours in the subject area as well successful completion of the subject area test of the ICTS in the area of endorsement. It is important to consult with a Secondary Education advisor if you are interested in establishing an area of endorsement. The College of Education is permitted to recommend for endorsement only at time of recommending for initial licensure to teach.
