Secondary Education Accelerated Cohort Program
College of Education

Admission Requirements - Program of Study - Certification and Graduation Requirements - Clinical Hours - Tuition and Financial Aid - Housing - Application

The need for middle school and high school teachers with expertise in math. biology, chemistry, business, history, and the English language arts continues to increase.  Consequently, starting in Summer 2010, the College of Education offers you an efficient and highly effective way to help meet this need.

In just three semesters of full-time graduate study at the historic Gage Building in downtown Chicago, you can complete all of the coursework required to obtain Illinois teacher certification in secondary math, biology, chemistry, business, history, or English.

Students in this accelerated cohort program take 3 graduate courses, or 10 credit hours, per semester over two semesters.  In the third semester, cohort students student teach and take a classroom-based research course required for the MA in Secondary Education. Upon successful completion of these courses and all other state certification requirements, the Type 03 teaching certificate is awarded.

To complete the MA degree in Secondary Education, accelerated students enroll in one final graduate course during their fourth and final semester.  This final course is FREE FOR ALL ACCELERATED COHORT STUDENTS.*

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to this accelerated cohort option, you first need to earn admission to the graduate program in Secondary Education. The initial admission requirements are as follows:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (120 credit hours required)
  • Minimum 2.7 overall GPA in all courses on your official transcripts
  • Completed Roosevelt University online application for graduate admission.

The second step in the process, once you have confirmation of admission, is to seek approval from your Secondary Education faculty advisor to enroll in the Accelerated Cohort courses. To receive approval, you must have:

  • a minimum 3.0 GPA in an undergraduate major in math, biology, chemistry, business, history, or English
  • a passing score on the Illinois Test of Basic Skills
  • a total of no more than two deficiencies in general education and the academic concentration (math, biology, chemistry, business, history, or English majors only)
  • an effective essay response to the question: “How do you want your students to describe you as a teacher ten years from now?” (submitted with the online application for graduate admission)

Teacher candidates who meet these additional expectations will be advised to enroll in the accelerated cohort courses.  Teacher candidates who do not meet these requirements will have to defer their admission to another summer, or enroll in the traditional graduate secondary education track.

Program of Study

All accelerated cohort courses are offered on the Chicago campus of Roosevelt University, directly across from Milennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago. All core courses are taught by full-time faculty and scheduled in a manner convenient for full-time graduate study. All students admitted to the accelerated cohort will take courses and complete required field experiences together as a tight-knit group of highly qualified and mutually invested future teaching professionals.

Courses will be offered in the sequence below, leading to Illinois teacher certification in just three semesters.  Students then must take one additional course of study during their fourth consecutive semester, thereby completing their MA in Secondary Education. STUDENTS WILL PAY NO ADDITIONAL TUITION COSTS FOR THIS FINAL COURSE IF THEY HAVE ADHERED TO THE FAST TRACK SEQUENCE OF COURSES AND ENROLL IN THIS FINAL COURSE IN THE SUMMER SEMESTER IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING STUDENT TEACHING.

To achieve certification, students will take 26 credit hours of courses in education.  An additional 6 credit hours are required for the MA in Secondary Education, for a total of 32 credit hours.

A substantial discount on the tuition for these additional general education or content area courses is possible, if the courses are taken at Roosevelt University at the 100 or 200 levels.  Upon acceptance into the program, you will be notified of any additional courses that you need to take in order to obtain your certification, and the discount that is available.  STUDENTS WITH MORE THAN TWO DEFICIENCIES IN GENERAL EDUCATION AND/OR THEIR ACADEMIC MAJOR WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENROLL IN ACCELERATED COHORT COURSES.

All students must take and pass a state required content area exam prior to enrolling in student teaching in the Spring semester.  To be eligible for certification, all students also must take and pass the Assessment of Professional Teaching, which is usually taken during student teaching. Please visit http://www.icts.nesinc.com/ for more information. The application for certification will be competed during the Spring 2011 semester.

An application for graduation, and the maintenance of a 3.0 GPA, is required for graduation and continued enrollment in the Secondary Education program.

Clinical Hours

It is a state requirement that students complete 100 clinical hours in preparation for student teaching.

Please note that clinical hours must be completed during the semester in which the course is offered.  Your instructors will work with you to construct a schedule for observation and practice teaching that works for you, within certain parameters; please note that most clinical hours must be completed during traditional school hours.
