Certificate in Teaching Writing Intensive Courses
College of Education

This online graduate certificate program is for K-16 teachers who wish to enhance their teaching of writing in middle schools and high schools, community colleges, and elementary school settings.  In addition to exploring cutting edge research, best practices in writing instruction, and the use of new technologies, this online program will show teachers how to prepare learners for college writing and meet new guidelines for the teaching of writing intensive courses recently established by the Illinois State Board of Education.

This online graduate certificate program consists of three online courses, spread out over one academic year.  Each course is 12 weeks in length and uses a Blackboard platform.  These courses and the semesters they are offered are:

  • ENG 467, Studies in Composition Theory  (Summer Term)
  • EDUC 488, Using Technology to Teach Writing Across the Curriculum (Fall  Term)
  • EDUC 484, Teaching Writing Intensive Courses (Spring Term)

Students may take these courses in any order or sequence; each course is 3 credits, for a total of 9 credits in the program.  The first course in this program—ENG 467—begins May 21, 2007 with subsequent courses unfolding every semester thereafter.

In order to be admitted to the program, students must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university and a 3.0 GPA in their undergraduate or graduate major.  Students also must complete a brief, online, supplemental admission form. The program is open to certified teachers and others seeking or considering teacher certification.  Please contact the Office of Admissions for more information.

Courses in this certificate program may be applied as electives toward a masters degree  in Teacher Leadership (MATL).  Please see the Teacher Leadership website for more details and information.
