Field Experiences and Student Teaching

College of Education

Welcome!

Practical experience in classrooms throughout the Chicago metropolitan area is an essential aspect of all Roosevelt University teacher certification programs. Students in our programs must accumulate at least 100 hours of field experience before they are eligible to student teach; these hours are distributed among various courses. Student teaching itself is a 15-week experience.

General Information about Field Placements and Student Teaching

Field Placement Sites

The Office of Student Resources arranges these placements. Field Placement and Student Resource Officers and staff members are located in both Chicago and Schaumburg campuses; and are on campus year-round to make these arrangements.  The office works with schools districts throughout the six-county metropolitan area of Chicago, aiming to place candidates in sites near their home or work. We prefer to work with schools whose educational programs complement the College’s Conceptual Framework.

With a few exceptions, field placements take place in public schools. Our students are not permitted to do field placements that are supervised in schools they have either attended or worked in.  Students cannot receive financial compensation while they are doing field observations or when they are student teaching; for supervised field experiences, there is a fee of $110.00, which will be added on to your tuition bill.  For students who are enrolled in courses with unsupervised field experiences, there is a placement and processing fee of $25.00, which will be added to your tuition bill.

Background and TB Tests

Prior to doing field work, all students must complete a background check through a firm with whom the College has made arrangements.  This check is required by several districts before they can welcome our students into their schools.  A TB test is required of all students prior to student teaching; some school districts ask that teacher candidates in their schools even for brief observations be tested for TB. More information about taking these tests is available at both the Chicago and Schaumburg campuses.

Field Experiences

Among the courses all teacher candidates take, whether they are preparing for early childhood, elementary, secondary, or other certification (special education, reading, or music), there are four or five for which field experiences are an integral part. The specific courses vary, but in each program they add up to a minimum of 100 hours of field work.  (For specific courses in each program area, current students can visit their program area’s main page.)

These field experiences are arranged by the Office of Field Placements in conjunction with program faculty. Requirements for each of these courses differ, but some aspects are standard:

  • Experiencing diversity – all RU teacher candidates will have experience working with students from a wide variety of backgrounds and in both urban and suburban schools.
  • Teaching practice – at least one field experience will include an opportunity to teach a lesson to an entire class; usually this lesson will be observed by the course instructor or another faculty supervisor.
  • Working with special needs students – one course taken by all RU teacher candidates considers classroom adaptations for students with special needs; 25 hours of field experience in a variety of special education settings are an integral part of this course.  Students majoring in special education will have many more hours of fieldwork in these classrooms.

For some courses, instructors have made arrangements for field work with a limited number of schools; some courses actually meet in these schools. Upon registering for a course that requires field placement hours, teacher candidates apply for the field experience electronically by completing the Application for Field Experience; program advisors will provide further information and instructions.

Student Teaching

After meeting program requirements, RU teacher candidates spend 15 weeks as a student teacher in a public school; depending upon the program, this may be in one classroom or in two or three. Throughout student teaching, candidates attend a seminar with a university supervisor; all are adjunct members of our faculty and are experienced classroom teachers. Supervisors visit teacher candidates regularly to observe their progress.

RU students apply for student teaching approximately 10 months in advance.  Information sessions about student teaching are held in early in the fall semester and early in the spring semester. Students will be informed of the date and time for the information sessions in one of their classes; deadlines for applications are given below.  They are also posted in several places at both the Chicago and Schaumburg campuses.

All RU students must have passed the appropriate Illinois content-area test prior to student teaching; they must also have demonstrated dispositions appropriate to classroom work with students. For undergraduates, student teaching always takes place during the last semester of the program; in graduate programs, students may be eligible for student teaching prior to completing master’s degree.

Application DEADLINES

Student teaching applications are due two semesters prior to student teaching, according to the following schedule.

SECONDARY EDUCATION. SPECIAL EDUCATION, ELEMENTARY EDUCATION, EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, and MUSIC EDUCATION STUDENTS PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF YOUR DUE DATE.

  • October 15 for the following fall  (Music Education Students only)
  • November 1 for the following fall (all other program areas)
