Field Experiences and Student Teaching
in Elementary Education - Graduate Programs
College of Education

Roosevelt University is committed to diversity and to that end will place you in field experiences that enable you to have a wide range of experience with different populations of children so that you are prepared for the classrooms you can expect to be in once you begin teaching.

Candidates for initial certification in elementary education at both undergraduate and graduate levels (Type 09) will accumulate at least 100 hours of field experiences prior to student teaching.

Field Experiences

In the graduate elementary education program, field experience hours are attached to several different courses. They are as follows.

  • ELED 405 Foundations of Education (10 clock hours, arranged by instructor)
  • SPED 419 Exceptional Children and Youth (25 clock hours, arranged by Office of Field Placements and Partnerships)
  • READ 420 Teaching Reading in the Elementary School (25 clock hours arranged by instructor and OFPP)
  • ELED 421 Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School (25 clock hours, arranged by instructor and OFPP)
  • ELED 426 Methods of Teaching Science in the Elementary School (25 clock hours, arranged by OFPP)

Student Teaching in the Traditional Program

Student teaching, including 15 weeks of classroom experience and a weekly seminar, is the culminating activity in the elementary education program. Prior to student teaching, you must have completed all the general education requirements, academic concentration requirements (when applicable), and all of the courses in the professional sequence.

The Type 03 certificate qualifies the teacher to be responsible for all instruction in the major content area; therefore, elementary education students must do their student teaching in a non-departmentalized or self-contained classroom.

For more information, see Office of Field Placements and Partnerships.
