Graduate Programs in Elementary Education
Elementary Education | College of Education

The College of Education at Roosevelt University offers a graduate program in elementary educations that lead to initial Type 03 certification.  It is designed specifically to meet the needs of adult, career change students and is taught primarily by full time faculty with a commitment to the students at Roosevelt University. Our program is focused on state and national teaching standards and prepares highly qualified teachers to meet the rigors and demands of No Child Left Behind.

The program is offered in two formats: a traditional program and a fast-track Saturday program (currently offered at Schaumburg only).

The traditional program offers the flexibility of taking 3 to 12 semester hours of coursework each term.  Students who find the need to stop out for a term may do so without difficulty in this program.  Courses are offered in the evening and on Saturday and students can begin the program at any time fall, spring, or summer.  Students who enroll in six to nine semester hours of course work per term (including summer) can complete the 36 semester hour certification and graduation program in two years.

The Fast-Track Saturday program is a cohort program offered on Saturdays (currently in Schaumburg only), with some on-line courses. Students take three courses a semester, including the summer term, and complete their course work for certification in one year, with an additional semester for student teaching and completion of the MA in Elementary Education.

Both programs require the same courses for certification (33 semester hours); a final course (EDUC 480) is required for the MA but not for certification and can be taken along with student teaching or at a later time.

Here is a sample schedule for students in the regular programs. Some students may need to take undergraduate general education courses to satisfy the general education requirement in addition to these education courses. In the fast-paced programs, students are required to take three courses; since all courses are equivalent to courses in the regular program, students who cannot finish with their cohort may switch to the regular program.
