Program of Study
Elementary Education - Bachelor of Arts
Elementary Education | College of Education

The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education program at Roosevelt University is a comprehensive initial certification program that seeks to develop teachers who are well equipped to meet the diverse educational needs of the wide spectrum of students from kindergarten through ninth grade.

The Program

The Elementary Education initial certification program provides:

  • Outstanding faculty, personal advising, and small class size
  • Supervised field experiences in actual classrooms that bridge theory and practice and result in teachers who are prepared practically as well as philosophically
  • Convenient daytime classes at both the Chicago and Schaumburg campuses

The undergraduate program of study in elementary education is a 51 semester hour initial certification program, and the professional course work meets Illinois State Board of Education requirements for Type 03 teacher certification (K-9).  It is approved through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Core Courses

Several foundation classes are required of students which give them an opportunity to examine educational issues from a Pre-K through high school perspective.  These classes include:

Methods Courses

In addition, elementary education majors enroll in a series of courses that address methods of teaching including:

  • EDUC 303 Health for Educators
  • EDUC 321 Creative Arts in Education

Field Experience Courses

  • ELED 261 Field Experience and Seminar in Elementary Education
  • ELED 361 Pre-student Teaching Field Experience

Student Teaching

Student teaching is a fifteen-week, full time placement.  Arrangements for student teaching are made one full year in advance.  Prior to student teaching, all other certification requirements, including State of Illinois general education requirements and the professional sequence of courses listed above must be completed.

General Education Requirements
