School Counseling
Counseling and Human Services | College of Education

The School Counseling Program prepares students to work as professional counselors in an elementary, middle, or high school.

Students are required to take the following courses:
(39-42* Semester Hours)

Core courses for all students:

  • CHS 400 Orientation to Graduate Study
  • CHS 401 Professional Orientation, Ethics, and Writing   
  • CHS 406 Statistics and Research Methods in Counseling
  • CHS 411 Social and Cultural Foundations
  • CHS 413 Foundations of Counseling Theory
  • CHS 416 Human Appraisal
  • CHS 417 Career and Lifestyle Planning
  • CHS 421 Theories and Dynamics of Group Counseling
  • CHS 457 Topics in Human Development

Specialized courses:

  • CHS 414 Seminar in School Counseling
  • SPED 419 Exceptional Children and Youth (or CHS 422: Substance Abuse for students having satisfied House Bill 150 requirements in exceptional education)
  • CHS 426 Pre-Practicum: Theories and Interventions in Counseling
  • CHS 428 Practicum: Clinical Practice in the Schools
  • CHS 496 Internship I: School Counseling
  • CHS 498 Internship II: School Counseling*

Additional course requirements for students without a teaching certificate:

  • CHS 415 School Environment, Classroom Management, and Consultation
  • CHS 418 Organization, Administration, and Leadership of Effective School Counseling Programs.

Practica and Internships

Practica and internships are located in an elementary, middle, or high school where a variety of counseling services are offered to students.  (Hours required:  150 hours for practica; 600* hours for internship)

*hours vary depending on years of teaching experience

Certification

To qualify for the School Service Professional Certificate in Guidance (Type 73), ISBE also requires satisfactory scores on the Illinois Basic Skills and Guidance Tests before issuing a certificate. Click here to go to the certification home page for more information.
