Mental Health Counseling
Counseling and Human Services | College of Education

The Mental Health Counseling Program is designed to prepare students for work as professional counselors in comprehensive mental health agencies. 

Students are required to take the following courses:
(60 Semester Hours)

Core courses for all students:

  • CHS 400 Orientation to Graduate Study
  • CHS 401 Professional Orientation, Ethics, and Writing
  • CHS 406 Statistics and Research Methods in Counseling
  • CHS 411 Social and Cultural Foundations
  • CHS 413 Foundations of Counseling Theory
  • CHS 416 Human Appraisal
  • CHS 417 Career and Lifestyle Planning
  • CHS 421 Theories and Dynamics of Group Counseling
  • CHS 457 Topics in Human Development

Specialized courses:

  • CHS 419 Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
  • CHS 420 Marriage and Family Counseling
  • CHS 422 Topics in Substance Abuse
  • CHS 431  Mental Health Counseling
  • CHS 460 Cognitive Counseling OR PSYC 641: Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies
  • PSYC 620 Intellectual Assessment OR PSYC 625: Personality Assessment
  • Two courses from the following electives:  CHS 513: Clinical Biofeedback, CHS 462 Health and Holistic Counseling, CHS 463: Counseling and Psychotherapy Integration, CHS 464: Child and Adolescent Counseling 
  • CHS 426 Pre-Practicum: Theories and Interventions
  • CHS 427 Practicum: Clinical Practice in Public and Private Agencies
  • CHS 597  Internship I: Mental Health Counseling
  • CHS 599  Internship II: Mental Health Counseling

Practica and Internships

Practica and internships are located in comprehensive mental health agencies that provide multiple services for the range of mental health needs in the community, including those for clients diagnosed with mental and emotional disorders.  (Hours required:  150 hours for practica; 900 hours for internship)

Licensure

The Mental Health Counseling Program meets the academic requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor and Clinical Professional Counselor in the State of Illinois.  In addition, this CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs)-accredited program also meets the academic requirements for national certification in Mental Health Counseling.
