Students are required to take the following courses:

- CHS 401 Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Counseling
- CHS 406 Fundamentals of Statistics, Research, and Program Evaluation
- CHS 411 Social and Cultural Foundations
- CHS 413 Counseling Theory and Practice
- CHS 416 Human Appraisal
- CHS 417 Career and Lifestyle Development
- CHS 421 Theories and Dynamics of Group Counseling
- CHS 457 Human Growth and Development
Specialized courses:

414 Seminar in School Counseling
- SPED 419 Exceptional Children and Youth (or CHS 422: Substance Abuse for students having satisfied House Bill 150 requirements in exceptional education)

498 Internship: School Counseling (3-6 credits, 1-2 semesters)*
Additional course requirements for students without a teaching certificate and two years full-time teaching experience:

- CHS 418 Organization, Administration, and Leadership of Effective School Counseling Programs.
