TRIO Programs

Veterans Upward Bound
(VUB) is the only veterans Federal TRIO Program funded by the United
States Department of Education in the State of Illinois. VUB is a
pre-college program designed to assist eligible veterans prepare for
entry into the college program of their choice by "knocking the rust off
their academic skills." Most veterans, who have not completed high
school or college, may be eligible for the VUB program. All VUB services
are free to eligible veterans.
Students
in the Veterans Upward Bound Program receive:
- Academic and
skills assessment
- Academic,
financial aid, and personal counseling
- Classroom
instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, study skills, computer
basics, and other essential subjects necessary for success in a
college environment
- One-on-one
tutoring and computer-based instruction
- Information on and
assistance in taking advantage of post-secondary educational
opportunities
- Assistance in
completing college admission and financial aid applications
- Opportunities to
attend career option, resume writing, and life-skills workshops
- Opportunities to
attend college-level courses during the summer, at cooperating
specialty VUB programs, in several Western US states
- Transportation
support for travel to and from VUB classes on Chicago Transit
Authority busses and trains
Applicants
who wish to be in the program must:
- Meet the
low-income eligibility criteria as established by the U.S.
government
- Meet first
generation college going status, by having parents or legal
guardians who do not have a four-year college degree
- Have veteran
status - you must have served in the U.S. military for 181 days or
more, any part of which must have occurred after January 31, 1955.
Veterans must have a military discharge OTHER THAN dishonorable; be a U.S citizen, national permanent resident, or have
evidence of an intent to become a citizen of the U.S, and/or one of
its possessions, including the Pacific Islands and Micronesia
- Show a need for
academic support to successfully pursue a post-secondary education
