Friday, August 28

New Student & University Convocation

11 a.m., Auditorium Theatre        

Convocation is the traditional and official beginning of the academic year and will feature a special welcome to new students by President Middleton, remarks from the Board of Trustees, greetings from academic and student leaders, introduction of our new faculty and staff, and the official welcome to all new students into the University. A lunch will follow the ceremony for all students who attend the ceremony.

                 

U-Pass Distribution

12-4 p.m., Auditorium Building Room 628                                 

For those full time, degree-seeking students attending the Chicago Campus, it’s time to pick up your U-Pass. This is your ticket to unlimited riding aboard CTA buses and trains.

                                              

Karaoke and Mocktails                                      

8-10:30 p.m., Auditorium Building 2nd Floor, Congress Lounge 

Do you think you can become the next idol, or at least make it to the preshow? Showcase your superstar talent in our first get to know you event. Grab your friends, and get the school year started by joining SPEED for a night of Karaoke and mocktails.  It’s as easy as picking your favorite song and entering our Karaoke booth! Bonus: You can record your performance and watch it again and again. Not a singer?   Come join us and watch the fun!

SPEED Takes You to IKEA

Forget something?  Or maybe you’re looking to fill that space in the corner of your dorm room? SPEED has got you covered!  Meet in the lobby of the University Center or ROW at 12 p.m. and we’ll bus you over to IKEA where you’ll have two and a half hours to shop.  Brought to you by SPEED Chicago and your Student Activity Fee.

The Cirques is Back in Town!

7 p.m.                                    

Looking for something new to do in the city? Join SPEED for an evening of acrobatics, excitement, and music at Cirque Shanghai. Twenty-eight performers will amaze you with feats of agility and pure magic, as they float and juggle in the air. This is a circus like no other, where the sets and story change so quickly you won’t want to blink. Come experience the fun and excitement of Cirque Shaghai at Navy Pier.  Purchase your ticket for only $10 at the CSI, Auditorium Room 344, starting Monday, Aug. 24.  Be sure to have your RU student ID with your fall validation sticker on the back (you can get your ID and sticker in the Registrar's Office in AUD Room 124).  Limit one ticket per RU student.

FREE "Sears" Tower Tour

2:30 p.m.              

Yes, we know.  Technically it’s the Willis Tower, but we aren’t ready to call it that.  Despite the new name, the view is still stunning and we’re going all the way up to the 103rd floor for the best view in the city!  Meet in the AUD Michigan Lobby at 2:30 p.m.  Sign up outside the SPEED Chicago office, AUD Room 338, starting Monday, Aug. 24.  Space is limited to the first 100 Roosevelt students that sign up! Architecture Boat Tours: Tickets on Sale TODAY!

It’s one of Chicago’s most popular attractions.  Enjoy the breathtaking architecture along the Chicago River and lake front on Saturday, Sept. 5.  Purchase your tickets for only $5 at the Center for Student Involvement, AUD Room 344, with your validated RU student ID (you can get your ID and validation sticker in the Registrar's Office in AUD Room 124) .  Limit one ticket per RU student ID.  Brought to you by SPEED Chicago and your Student Activity Fee.

                                   

First Day of School Fun Photos

Is today your first, or second day of school? Be sure to remember the moment by stopping SPEED’s photo booth and getting a picture to commemorate the New Year. Your picture will be placed inside a button or key chain, so you can take it with you everywhere you go. Now you will never forget how happy you were before the school year started!

You may be asking yourself, “Where do I go to join a student organization, to get a job, or where can I get some free tutoring?” All your questions will be answered at this year’s Involvement Fair. The fair will showcase student services departments as well as student organizations on campus. Brought to you by the Center for Student Involvement.

SPEED Movie Night: The Hangover

It's time to let loose and celebrate your first week at Roosevelt!  Visit all the student services offices for free food and prizes, beginning with International Programs in AUD Room 336 and ending with the Academic Success Center in AUD Room 442.  Each office has a special surprise for you and if you visit all the offices, you'll be entered into a drawing for some amazing prizes.  Be sure to bring your RU student ID.        

Street Smarts

Come learn practical self defense for free, right here at Roosevelt! Participants will learn strategies to stay safe and increase overall awareness in a fun and safe environment. Please join us for this exciting new class. Brought to you by the Athletics Department.

Do you need an excuse to get out of your room? We have one! It’s time for Carnival Night, come play games with SPEED, as we bring back Wii and Rockband to entertain you! Not in the mood for games? Get your free airbrush art, henna tattoo or balloon animal. Hungry? Be sure to stop by and grab some cotton candy, a snow cone, or some popcorn. Don’t miss this fun night that has a little something for everyone.
