Reasons to Seek Counseling
In general, people come to counseling because they want to feel better about themselves or their relationships with others. Some specific reasons include:
- Enhancing ability to cope more effectively with stress
- Overcoming feelings of depression or anxiety
- Overcoming procrastination or academic difficulties
- Improving relationships with family and friends
- Overcoming loneliness and shyness
- Increasing self confidence and assertiveness
- Dealing with alcohol and other drug issues
- Clarifying values and priorities
- Understanding sexuality
- Dealing with eating or sleeping issues
- Coping with crisis or trauma
- Coping with loss or times of transition
- Dealing with issues from the past that negatively affect the present
- Managing other emotional and psychological concerns
Often, people enter counseling with undefined concerns—just a sense that things aren’t quite right. This is a perfectly acceptable reason to enter therapy; discussing this with a counselor can give you clarity.
Making the Initial Appointment
To make an appointment to see a counselor, contact our office at
312-341-3548.
Confidentiality
The information you disclose to your counselor is private and will not be discussed with your family members, friends, doctors, Roosevelt University personnel, or anyone else, unless you give specific, written consent. However, there are a few situations in which the counselor can release limited information without your expressed permission, including the following:
- If the counselor believes that you may seriously injure yourself or another person.
- In the event you indicate abuse, neglect or exploitation of a child under age 18 or of an individual age 60 or older who is unable to adequately care for him/herself.
- If the counselor is court-ordered to provide information.
Individual Counseling
Individual students can work with a counselor to explore their concerns and work toward a better understanding and resolution of their difficulties. Individual counseling sessions generally last 45-50 minutes and are usually held once a week, but can be held more or less often when appropriate.
Group Counseling
In group therapy, approximately 6 students meet weekly with one or two group therapists. Groups are especially well suited to people who are struggling with similar concerns, where they can learn from and with each other, and for those struggling with relationship issues like self-esteem, trust and intimacy.
Couples Counseling
The Counseling Center is committed to helping students work through problems they might be having in their relationships. Married and unmarried students are welcome to come, as well as students in traditional and non-traditional relationships. One member of the couple must be an enrolled student.
Consultation
There may be instances where you are concerned about a friend, family member, student, or someone else. We are available to discuss ways to handle these situations. Consultation is available to individuals and groups – students, faculty and staff.
Eligibility
Actively enrolled Roosevelt University students are eligible for services. The duration of counseling is determined by your needs and counselor or group availability. While most students continue here for counseling, The Counseling Center reserves the right to deny initial or additional service to an enrolled Roosevelt University student whose concerns and behavior are beyond what this office can effectively and ethically treat.
Fees
There is no charge for counseling services.

Referrals
The staff will work to refer a student to local resources, agencies, hospitals or clinics when the student’s needs require treatment not ordinarily provided in an out-patient setting with limited staff. The student health insurance, or other comparable health insurance plans, may reimburse part of the cost of private therapy or psychiatric services. If an outside referral is made, possible options to help lower costs will be suggested.
