Gary Wolfe, professor of humanities and English in the Evelyn T. Stone College of Professional Studies,
displays the World Fantasy Award he received in recognition of his contributions to the field of science
fiction and fantasy through his reviews and criticism. The award, in the form of a bust of horror writer H.P.
Lovecraft designed by renowned cartoonist Gahan Wilson, was presented at the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga
Springs, New York on Nov. 4, which drew nearly 1,200 attendees.
Wolfe is the author of several critical books, and writes a monthly review column for Locus magazine.

Charles Madigan, presidential writer in residence and former senior editor, correspondent and columnist for the Chicago Tribune, signed copies of his new book -30-, The Collapse of the Great American Newspaper, on Tuesday, Nov. 27 in the Sullivan Room. -30- tells about the decline of the American newspaper through essays by those who have been involved in the field of journalism.

President Chuck Middleton hosted a farewell reception for Provost and Executive Vice President Pamela Trotman Reid who will become president of Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, Conn., in January. Many of her friends throughout the University wished her well at the event held on Nov. 15 in the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University.

Roosevelt University was a sponsor of the 23rd annual Fiesta Cultural, a celebration of Latino culture, held on Sunday, Nov. 19 in Arlington Heights. Roosevelt students Nestor Avila, Noelany Clemente and Tito Clemente hold bags that were given to attendees. Also helping out at the booth were Michael Durnil, vice president for governmental affairs and university outreach; Lisa Encarnacion, director of university outreach and Sharon Del Prete, senior secretary, Office of University Communications.

The Schaumburg Campus-based Roosevelt Entertainment Commission (REC) held its first flag football tournament on Friday, Nov. 16 on the fields behind the powerhouse. Nine teams composed of students and staff competed, and Ray Wright, associate professor of computer science and telecommunications, refereed.

The Roosevelt University Alumni Association hosted a reception at the Penn Club on Nov. 7 in Manhattan for New York area alumni. Approximately 30 people visited with President Chuck Middleton, trustee Charles Hamilton and other University representatives.

Roosevelt University alumna Melissa Bean, Congresswoman from the Illinois’ Eighth Congressional District and Representative Steny Hoyer, the House Majority leader from Maryland’s Fifth District, held a press conference at Roosevelt University on Monday. Representative Bean described a new federal bill she is co-sponsoring which would protect consumers who take out home mortgages, while Representative Hoyer described the Democratic agenda in the House of Representatives.

Tony-Award winner Christine Ebersole headlined the Auditorium Theatre's 2007 gala on Nov. 2. For the first time in many decades, the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University was transformed into a glittering ballroom. Guests sat on the stage or on special platforms erected atop the orchestra level floor. The evening was sponsored by the Pasquinelli Family Foundation.

Ezekiel Emanuel describes his plan to provide health coverage to all Americans during a Dedication Day lecture titled "Beyond Band-Aids: Curing America’s Sick Healthcare System." Dr. Emanuel, chair of the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, made the presentation Nov. 8 in the Congress Lounge.

Roosevelt University Trustee John R. Newman (left), executive vice president of LaSalle Bank, received the Lifetime Industry Leadership Award from Roosevelt University Chuck Middleton at a gala dinner attended by 500 people on Nov. 1 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago. Newman was recognized by the University’s Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate for his many contributions to the field of real estate. He also is a member of the advisory board for the University’s Chicago School of Real Estate.

During their visit, they signed three agreements for educational collaborations, established three new partnerships and met with alumni in Shenyang. Hershey Felder, an internationally known actor and pianist, works with Roosevelt University student David Schofield during a master class for pianists on Tuesday in Ganz Hall. Schofield, a resident of Manchester, United Kingdom, was one of 10 RU pianists and singers participating in "The Real Thing" master classes and competition. The students competed for $6,000 in prize money. Felder, a member of the Chicago College of Performing Arts Board, is the creator and star of George Gershwin Alone and Monsieur Chopin.
